The Order of Christ was created in 1319, by order of King D. Dinis, after the extinction, by Pope Clement V, of the Order of the Templars, one of the most famous Military Orders of Cavalry, founded in 1118, in the aftermath of the 1st Crusade. With a decisive role in the Reconquest period, in the military activity against the Moors and in the settlement of the territory, the Order of the Templars was also the owner of a vast patrimony that, by right, belonged to the Holy See, a fact that threatened the sovereignty of the king. With the pretext of defending the Algarve coast from attacks by pirates and Maghrebian pirates, D. Dinis manages to decree the creation of the new religious-military order. The 1st headquarters of the Order of Christ was then the Castro Marim Castle, with one of the most solid defensive systems in the entire Kingdom of the Algarve and located on the maritime border with Morocco and in the vicinity of the Islamic community of Granada. “Castro Marim, First Seat of the Order of Christ” is an exhibition approved under the Interreg Spain-Portugal Program 2014-2020, supported by the European Union, co-financed 75% by the […]
Using its own methods of torture, the Catholic Inquisition was responsible for thousands of deaths and barbaric acts against human integrity, which only served to cause excruciating pain and atrocious suffering to those who did not profess their faith. Throughout the exhibition you can find several replicas used to punish the condemned and that convey to us a little of the horrors committed in the dark period of the inquisition. * This exhibition was approved under the Interreg Spain-Portugal 2014-2020 program, supported by the European Union, 75% co-financed by the ERDF | project 0131_FOURTOURS_5_E.

April 19 to July 17 patent | 10 am – 6 pm (Monday to Friday) Location: Lagos Cultural Center – Room 2 and 3 Free entry “Art-Space-Architecture Interdisciplinary Dialogue – The greatest potential for human freedom lies in self-determined restrictions” It was at the Art Academy of Düsseldorf (Germany), in 1970, that Ernst Föll studied and had the pleasure of having as a teacher the artist Joseph Beuys, considered one of the most influential German artists of the second half of the 20th century. It was also there that he met the Fluxus Art Movement, a libertarian movement characterized by a mixture of different arts, originally in the visual arts and later also in music and literature. This movement was very active in the 60s and 70s. However, it was considered anti-art, since at that time the Fluxus movement went against the very object of art. Ernst Föll witnessed this artistic manifestation, as his teacher and another group of artists had a thought beyond borders. It is with this thought and learning that Ernst learned to see Art in a broader way, without barriers and with a lot of ambition. In his artistic career, poetry, philosophy and architecture play a […]
EMERGING CYCLE PANDEMIC SYMBOLS April 21, Wednesday through June 19, Saturday Pandémic Symbols is an integral part of the Emerging Cycle of Teatro da Figuras, developed in 2020 in an artistic residence at home during mandatory confinement in Portugal. Composed of a series of fifteen paintings and two sculptures, this project reflects the chaotic state in which we find ourselves making reference to feelings, symbols, changes, prohibitions, obligations and doubts resulting from this pandemic. In this way, there is a strong reference to the prevailing social and economic instability, at the moment, worldwide.
Born in Albufeira, Ana Sota is a self-taught artist who likes to arouse emotions through her work. She attended several courses in printmaking, drawing and painting in Macau (Asia) and in Varese (Italy). The artist explores monochromatic a lot and almost always uses acrylic on canvas and various types of wood and MDF. Always with a lot of color, she likes the game between the bright and the opaque; the use of strong colors and the sometimes minimalist repetition of the color game allow us to enter a simple but vibrant universe. This exhibition is a tribute to the Ecological and Zoophilic Association of Aljezur (AEZA), which celebrates its twentieth anniversary in May this year. The paintings we present represent some of the many dogs and cats abandoned and welcomed by AEZA in recent years. Some of them died. Others, the vast majority fortunately, were adopted. These paintings wanted to focus on the look of these dogs and cats. The look of an animal, when it stares at me, disturbs me. It is a look that seeks someone, something. It is a sign of unease. My eyes meet the animal’s look, but how can I see a look? I know nothing about what’s going on in your head. EXHIBITION 8 APRIL – 3 JULY 2021 LÍGIA OLIVEIRA BETWEEN LAND AND SEA BETWEEN THE SEA AND THE SHORE Biography Lígia Oliveira grew up surrounded by the tranquility of the landscapes of southern Portugal, which have inspired her ever since. She initially studied Product Design, and later obtained a PhD in Urban Design in Barcelona, where she had the experience of working in various disciplines and cultures. This helped Oliveira to develop a broader approach to art, by understanding the physical space and its elements, its relationship with other disciplines and to train the eye for details at different scales. Fascinated by the possibilities of expression and investigation of art, with her work Oliveira intends to touch, inform and inspire emotionally for an integrated relationship with nature. Multiplying the elements until they form patterns fascinates her, as well as finding new ways to interact with each other, in a balance between discipline and freedom of expression. These repetitive sequences transform the painting process into a tranquilizing and meditative act. Oliveira was a professor at the University of Porto and a researcher at the University of Barcelona. She is the author of several scientific articles, co-author of the book The Economy […]

PANOPTIC ARQUENT ASSOCIATION Theater of Figures | Faro On the assumption that all freedom is conditional, it is even more so today. Free from so many restrictions. The exercise of this paradox is manifested in the voluntary way in which we observe Jeremy Bentham’s architectural design. Far beyond the idealization of a prison, we become the jailers of a fabricated image. The hairpiece brings back the truth and intimacy. Expanding the reach of voyeuristic technology over everyday gestures. The distance from the physical world, the current cybernetics, the falling of the curtain on the dialogue, the absent place, the global ghost, the “east so close”, life sealed in a domestic envelope. Addictions, private routines and indulgences, and ‘on the net’ exposure at all levels: personal, intimate, close, social, systemic. We dance in hell. Hell is other people. And the devil, someone said, is annoyance. Sibí and Pip, two of the poet’s first inventions, are the ones who take us on this trip. Sibí, the Ibis, a crazy bird, inventor of words; and Pip, little Person’s secretary, a forgotten keeper of the papers and words of his ark. They are together with the characters that jump from texts such as Os Ratos, O Poema Pial, O Menino who had a hat or the Descending Train, that present the child with the words that are played by Pessoa. In the world of this pretending poet everything arises from his sheets of paper, his writings, his words. The words, the characters that appear […]

Two dedicated and zealous employees carry out, in a very methodical and thoughtful way, the difficult task of recovering these “relics”. For each situation that these two characters face, they find bizarre solutions and “dance” a work full of rhythm. Every time they discover one of those phrases, one of those treasures of oral tradition that they try to save at all costs, everything stops! And they enjoy that unique ecstatic moment. June 19, 9:30 pm, Grand Auditorium A production by the company Mala Voadora in co-production with the National Theater D. Maria II. In 2017, the company Mala Voadora had the idea that in 2020 it would do OFF. A show about the end. The end of a cycle. The end of our lives, the end of the planet, the end of new ideas, the end of Mala Voadora. The end of everything. An idea that was nothing original. We all know that the end is inevitable, but at the time it was imagined more distant than now. It was thought that there would be time to invent it. The gift stole that time. Thus, OFF will be a show about the end without much imagination. A show that you know how it ends. And as there is nothing to invent, there is all the time to celebrate. Each tree planted was baptized with the name of the student who cultivated it, seeking to promote and stimulate environmental values in the younger ones. Afforestation is the main objective of this initiative, but this time, with native trees, trees originating in the territory itself, since the plucked are invasive species, such as eucalyptus and acacia trees. In addition to being more adapted to the soil and climate of the region, resisting better weather, drought or disease, indigenous trees improve soil quality […]

“PROTECT YOURSELF, STAY HOME, WE’LL HELP”
The country is currently experiencing a period of considerable social, economic and health vulnerability. This situation has been given the best attention and follow-up by the Municipality of Lagoa, and a plan has been drawn up to support the population, which is particularly vulnerable given the economic situation. In this sense, the project arises to provide for situations where the local residents have economic conditions, but belong to the groups with the highest epidemic risk who are without informal support network to be able to go to the supermarket and/or pharmacy. The City Council has in operation a bank of volunteers of the City Council, Parish Councils, IPSS s, Sports clubs and Associations, to be identified and supported the elderly (over 65 years)the carriers of autoimmune diseases and chronic diseases – who are without an informal support network – so that they can stay at home, and support in the need to purchase food and/or pharmaceuticals is left to the volunteer teams.

The Salt, the sun and the south and a different late afternoon in Salina Félix
To the south and in the sun in a late afternoon, the participants of the first action of the initiative “End of Afternoon in Salt” were able to collect their own salt, in an experience that aims to value the profession of salt and salt flower. In Salina Félix, in the middle of the Sapal de Castro Marim and VRSA Nature Reserve, the new salineiros learned about the whole process of artisanal saliniculture, collecting the salt manually, with the ancestral techniques that the fresh salineiros taught them. Home they took an enriching experience, 1 bag of the “best salt in the world” and also 2 packs of salt flower, which they themselves collected from the herseherand. The traditional sea salt of Castro Marim results from the conjugation of the salineiro’s work with the action of tides, sun and winds, and is not subject to any kind of subsequent treatment, presenting naturally white and bright. The salt flower was also observed, although atmospheric conditions did not allow collection. Also the salt flower does not undergo any kind of processing, dries in the sun and is then packed, maintaining the taste and humidity of the sea. This initiative is part of a strategy of valorization and promotion of salineiro and, consequently, of salt, which is one of the ex-libris of Castro Marim. Providing this contact of proximity and familiarization, it hopes to increase and boost the commercialization of local products in the tourist chain. About 2 months ago Castro Marim was also able to see legally protected the name “Sal e Flor de Sal de Castro Marim” (PDO – Protected Designation of Origin). The “End of Afternoon in Salt” is an action organized by the Municipality of Castro Marim and Odiana Association, integrated in the Blue Flag 2020 program and framed in the application “Heritage of Castro Marim: Valorization and Promotion of Local Producers and Endogenous Products”, composed by PO CRESC 2020, PADRE project, supported by Portugal and the European Union, co–financed at 70% by the FEDER.

Faro has shared scooters again
From Tuesday, 4 February, Faro will have 200 shared scooters through an electronic mobility platform that already provided shared cars and that now launches this more sustainable service, said the company responsible in Portugal. David Ferreira da Silva, responsible for the Bolt platform, told Lusa that, after the motor vehicles, the company will also provide scooters in Faro, the first Portuguese city where it will provide the service. The Algarve thus has these vehicles again, for now only in Faro, after last November – 10 months after the start of operations in the region – the electric scooters were removed from the streets of the Algarve capital and Portimão for reasons of option lack of profitability. “Right now, here in Portugal, we only have cars, although we have different types of category and for different types of users, but we also try to provide different solutions and now we are going to complement this mobility offer for users with scooters”, he said . David Ferreira da Silva said that the Algarve capital has about a dozen “collection and delivery points”, estimating that “after the summer” the service can be expanded “to other cities, either in the Algarve or in the […]
