CAL ELEMENTS Trio | MdC Jazz Club Special International Jazz Day
April 30th | 7pm | Solar da Música Nova Auditorium | Loulé
Mákina de Cena, an artistic structure based in Loulé, is once again part of UNESCO’s official celebrations with the CAL Jazz Collective, this time with a trio that includes two new elements, João Campos Palma and Filipe Sequeira. The concert will take place on the 30th of April, at 7 pm, in the Auditorium of Solar da Música Nova, in Loulé.
On International Jazz Day, a luxury trio based in the Algarve revisits the American songbook. From Broadway standards through Charlie Parker’s Bebop to more contemporary aesthetics, the audience will be involved in a journey led by João Palma’s accordion, associated with the rhythm section composed by Marco Martins, on bass, and Filipe Sequeira, on drums. CAL (Central ALgarve) Jazz Collective is a collective of professional jazz musicians (mostly from or residing in the Algarve), formed in Loulé in 2021, with artistic direction by Marco Martins and production by Mákina de Cena.
With the aim of bringing together several artists linked to Jazz and the Algarve, all of them with a nationally and internationally established path, CAL reflects in its music the maturity and experiences of its members, who in this “space” value the
composition, interpretation, arrangement of standards and the crossing of knowledge and languages.
With an open format, this collective intends to rotate and/or include new musicians and guests, in order to create and strengthen ties and synergies between them, adapting to each challenge and creation and renewing itself with each project.
The aim is thus to create a professional jazz structure, based in Loulé, dedicated to the creation, interpretation, training and aggregation of musicians, which fills the existing space in this area of the Central Algarve and the Eastern Algarve, and which, always
whenever possible, work in partnership with structures in the region.
UNESCO International Jazz Day: In November 2011, UNESCO officially designated 30 April as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role in bringing people together across the world. Every year, on this date, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue between cultures, diversity and respect for human rights and human dignity; for contributing to the eradication of discrimination and promoting freedom of expression, reinforcing the role of youth in the enactment of social change.
