In 1924, while living with exile status, Prokoviev received an unusual commission in Paris: the writing of music for a ballet. So far nothing new, as we were in the years of greatest expansion of ballet as a repository of musical creativity and opportunity for great composers. The issue is that for this production, which became the Trapézio ballet, there were only five instrumentalists available. It is from the material of this unusual musical sketch that Prokofiev collects and reorganizes the contents for his unique quintet.
Sean Shepherd, originally from the USA, is one of the fastest-growing songwriters on the North American continent. His music has been created on commission from some of the world’s most important orchestras and the Boston Globe claims that Shepherd gives us a taste of “the vital taste of the future”.
This concert presents listeners with a lesser-known work by a composer who needs no introduction, Sergei Prokofiev, side by side with the music of a composer in full maturity (he is 43 years old) and with much to talk about in the future.
