“Alice no País do Lixo” is a fabulous show aimed at young people, with environmental and civic awareness goals. Sofia Brito, artistic director of AORCA, invited the Brazilian artist Maria Clara Villa Lobos, residing in Belgium, to come to Lagos to develop and premiere this piece, in a new version in Portuguese. The artistic presentations will be articulated with an associated educational program, in collaboration with the Novas Descobertas Project, at the permaculture farm Vale da Lama da Lama, with the intention of raising awareness among younger generations about the consequences of the consumer society that leads us to create more and more waste on the planet, polluting our oceans, natural and urban spaces around the world, thus opening up more dialogue on the subject of waste, regenerative practices and waking up to the urgency that the subject requires.
This cross-disciplinary creation, inspired by the famous short story by Lewis Caroll “Alice in Wonderland”, is aimed at children from 6 to 12 years old. The play tells the story of Alice, an eight-year-old girl who lives in a developed country. Like many girls her age, she has lots of toys and things to play with, but being an only child, she still gets bored alone. What Alice would really love to have is a pet, a real animal, not another stuffed animal like the dozens she already has but on her eighth birthday she gets one more stuffed animal, a big white rabbit. At night, angry and feeling cheated, she discreetly throws the toy in the trash and goes to sleep. She regrets that she wakes up suddenly and while looking for the rabbit in the rubbish bin, she falls into it. Strangely, the bin is very deep and Alice falls, falls and continues to fall until she lands on a mountain of garbage… and thus begins an adventure in this imaginary country – the Land of Garbage.
Villa-Lobos takes the public on this journey into the world of waste and its various aspects, not just the negative ones, but also the creative and transformative ones.
