Born in Lisbon in 1968, Artur Pizarro performed in public for the first time at the age of three and the following year he appeared on RTP alongside Professor Campos Coelho (student of Vianna da Motta, Isidor Phillip and Ricardo Viñes) at the program Histories of Music by Victorino d’Almeida. His first steps at the piano were accompanied by his maternal grandmother, the pianist Berta da Nóbrega and by Professor Campos Coelho. Later, between 1974 and 1990 Artur Pizarro studied in Portugal and the USA with Sequeira Costa (also a student of Vianna da Motta and also of Mark Hambourg, Marguerite Long, Jacques Février and Edwin Fischer).
For a year he also attended Aldo Ciccolini’s class at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris and received classes from Bruno Rigutto. This lineage gave Artur Pizarro a rare knowledge of the French and German school directly from the Golden Age of 20th century pianism. Artur Pizarro holds three first prizes of international competitions, namely the Vianna da Motta Competition in 1987, the Greater Palm Beach Invitational Piano Competition of 1989 (where six first prizes of international competitions are invited to compete) and the LeedsInternational Piano Competition of 1990 that truly launched his great international career.
