On December 22, 1808, one of the most important concerts in the history of music took place in Vienna – the benefit concert (Akademie) where Beethoven enshrines his reputation as a composer and pianist.
Despite the composer having some private sponsorship and enjoying the sale of works to publishers, the organization of a large concert in an important room was not only an important form of fundraising but also an opportunity to show his work.
And what a sublime concert it was: imagine hearing the Fifth Symphony for the first time, which still leaves us completely ecstatic … and imagine hearing the Sixth Symphony, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Choral Fantasy and a long improvisation with Beethoven himself at the piano, the aria ‘Ah Perfido’ and excerpts from his Mass … more than 4 hours of the best music ever composed!
The Classical Southern Orchestra thus celebrates the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth with a two-part recreation of this important concert.
