Almeida Garrett, founder of Romanticism in Portugal, also reformulated Portuguese theater in several areas, from its writing, to the teaching of theatrical art, and the promotion of its scenic practice. In his dramaturgy, there are aesthetic renovations, through which the dramatic text frees the scenic word from the oppression of the verse, dispensing with the obligation of the five acts and the so-called Aristotelian law of the three units (time, place and action). Frei Luís de Sousa, his masterpiece for the theatre, is structured in three acts written in prose, motivated by a theme of historical origin, in whose fiction the author produces a critical reinterpretation of the Sebastianist imaginary. The canonical text Frei Luís de Sousa will therefore be the work chosen for a dramatized reading, promoted by Adérito Lopes and Ruben Garcia.
