BLUE BOW CAMPAIGN
April 1st to 30th
Location: Lagos Municipality
Org .: CPCJ – Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth of Lagos
The Blue Ribbon Campaign started in 1989 in Virginia, USA, when a grandmother, Bonnie W. Finney, tied a blue ribbon to her car’s antenna as a way of alerting the curious who questioned her about the ills. treatments suffered by his granddaughter, who had already brutally killed his grandson.
Why blue? Because, despite being a beautiful color, Bonnie Finney did not want to forget the beaten and bruised bodies of her two grandchildren. Blue would serve as a constant reminder of her struggle to protect children from abuse.
This story, in addition to demonstrating how the concern of a single citizen had an effect on awakening the consciences of the general public, became universal, giving rise to a campaign for the Prevention of Child Abuse, to which the National Commission for Promotion of the Rights and Protection of Children and Youth (at national level) and the Commission for the Protection of Children and Youth in Lagos (at the local level) have come together, with the aim of raising awareness of the care and protection of children.
Among the activities carried out within the scope of the Prevention of Child Abuse in childhood, the Human Blue Ribbon stands out, temporarily suspended due to the pandemic COVID-19, and the Calendar of Affections that suggests the realization of a daily activity between parents and children , throughout the month of April, which intends to create opportunities to dedicate time and love to the little ones, whose documentation can be accessed in the annexes below.
The municipality of Lagos, the local parish councils, school groups and many other institutions that are in charge of equipment and / or projects in the areas of health and education are also associated with this campaign, helping to disseminate it through posters, advertising in the rear window of city buses, blue lighting of some public spaces, use of blue lace and / or decoration of spaces / buildings with blue lace and distribution of blue colored backpack bags to all children with a phrase referring to the motto of the campaign “ I will be whatever you give me … let it be love ”.
