BIOGRAPHY – Ana Canto (1962, Maputo – Mozambique)
It was through the door of painting that he reached pottery. The opportunity to work with Júlio Amaro, at the S. Lucas gallery, in Portimão, allowed her to learn what she came to explore and which she applies in her work.
Later, another opportunity led her to attend a course in Traditional Pottery Ceramics, at the Pottery School in Lagoa, with the master Fernando Rodrigues. Popular traits were assimilated.
In Lisbon, at IADE, and with Professor António Vasconcelos, she has the opportunity to gather other information and make new explanations. This experience will have been overwhelming, responsible for the intense and true interest in the world of ceramics. As an IADE student, she was assigned to participate in a workshop at Ar.co.
In parallel with the classes at IADE – Institute of Art and Decoration (after work), she works at Pátio Alfacinha (Lisbon), as a potter, where she creates pieces on the wheel.
At the invitation of the IEFP, she presents works for the National Crafts Competition, in 1992 and 1999, and in these two years she sees her pieces awarded at a regional level.
After two years, the path she takes is towards the Algarve, to work in the ceramics area. It was in the Algarve that she created her own atelier, and remains there until today.
Between breaks, she gave ceramics classes to 1st cycle children in the municipality of Lagos.
She participates in the artists’ exhibition at the opening of the Centro Cultural de Lagos. She belongs, for 10 years, to the Association of Artisans of the Algarve, having participated continuously in several collective exhibitions.
At MALA-Artistic Exhibition of Lagos, her works were exhibited in 2015 and 2017.
In a more recent period (2009 to 2021), she models and applies ceramics on fiberglass sculptures, designed by Karl Heinz Stock (president of Quinta dos Vales-Lagoa).
She collaborates in the street exhibitions of “Artistas de Barão”.
Exhibit at the “Walk & Art Fest” – walks with art in Barão de São João.
She directs her creation towards an artistic aspect, not abandoning, however, the creation of utilitarian pieces. Fascinated by the work on the wheel and by its ancestral features, it lifts pieces and innovates with each batch. These pieces are laboratories where she rehearses new experiences in the use of glazes and the combination of materials and colors. The four natural elements – Earth, Water, Fire and Air are always present.
Meanwhile, she furrows her artistic imprint, always in constant mutation, because in the end, everything counts.
