Synopsis
The waltzes of Strauss that from Vienna conquered Europe and became universal.
Program Notes
The 2022 Promenade Concerts season could not end better than with the sound of Viennese waltzes whose cadence still warms the hearts of all of us today. If at the beginning of their time, exclusive parties in the ballrooms of Austrian high society in the 19th century were happy, they quickly spread to all social classes in Europe and, in the 20th century, through the Hollywood dream factory, they reached the whole world. . Waltzes such as An der Schönen Blauen Donau, known among us as the Blue Danube, by Johann Strauss II, or the romantic duet of the operetta by Die lustige Witwe, The Merry Widow, by Franz Lehar, not only marked generations but were also the inspiration for the success of the great Music-Hall and cinema composers from the first half of the 20th century, such as Cole Porter, Frederick Loewe and George Gershwin, each with their own unmistakable aesthetic and musical language.
