As part of the Celebrations of the Centenary of the Farol de Alfanzina and the European Heritage Days 2022, the conference “Memories of Lagoa from Quinta dos Poços: from Pre-History to the Islamic” will take place on the 23rd of September, at 6:30 pm. , at the Convento de S. José Cultural Center.
Synopsis: The identification of the archaeological site of Quinta dos Poços 4 and 5 arose within the scope of the construction of the Lagoa-Carvoeiro Golf Course, more specifically in the area corresponding to track 1. The safeguard excavation carried out by a multidisciplinary team from ERA- Archeology made it possible to record structures of anthropic formation and remains in a wide diachrony, from Prehistory to the Islamic period.
In this archaeological site, one of the largest recorded in the municipality of Lagoa, more than six dozen negative structures excavated in the limestone geology were identified, namely silos/pits and funerary cavities of Islamic ritual, as well as four collective tombs that in chronological terms can be framed between Middle Neolithic and Chalcolithic, that is, from the 3rd to the 4th millennium BC.
The work carried out at Quinta dos Poços revealed particularly important data, especially in pre/proto-historical contexts, generating a reflection on the primitive human occupation on the Algarve coast, which in turn could motivate the revision of theories about the contexts funeral homes in the western part of the region. The results will be the subject of a public presentation by the Archeologists Francisco Correia and Catarina Furtado and the Biological Anthropologist Lucy Evangelista, who will allude to the structures and artefacts of the different occupation contexts and to the preliminary bioanthropological study of the exhumed human remains.
The conference, which takes place on September 23 at the Centro Cultural Convento de S. José, in Lagoa, starts at 6:30 pm and admission is free.
