ANNUAL THEME: THE WORLD SO FULL OF WORLDS
The world is vast. The books, infinite. By reading authors from different geographies we can increase the borders of our human and literary territory. Travel without leaving the same place. Opening windows in the head for a better understanding of ourselves, the other, and this global place we inhabit.
Book under analysis/reading: BEGGARS AND HIGH, by Albert Cossery
A 1955 novel, it is considered Albert Cossery’s masterpiece, and was the subject of three adaptations: two to the cinema and one in comics. A beggar by his own decision, Gohar, a former university professor of Literature and Philosophy, leads us, through the streets of Cairo and the pitfalls of morality, to a crude and detached knowledge of the fetters with which modern society smothers, right at birth, the vital possibilities of human beings. A vision of the civilized world as organic uselessness, in an explosive cocktail of mockery and reflection.
