New Yorker Michael Lauren (born 1950) started playing drums at the age of eight. He was a professor of drum studies (2003-2020 Ret.) And head of the jazz department (2005-2010 and 2015-2017) at the Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espectáculo (ESMAE) Porto, Portugal. Michael played and / or recorded with Paul Anka, Chuck Berry, Charles Brown, Tom Jones, Darlene Love, Benny Golson, Tom Harrell, Rick Margitza, Bob Mintzer, Bob Stewart, Bill Frisell, Hugo Alves Quartet, Orquestra Jazz Algarve, Orchestra of Jazz from Matosinhos.
Michael Lauren’s albums – All Stars “Once Upon A Time In Portugal” (2016) and " Old School / Fresh Jazz" (2018) were chosen as one of the 10 best national albums (Portugal) of 2016 and 2018, respectively. Michael is the author of seven books.
