The Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar are a group of tombs that make up a necropolis from the Chalcolithic period, located in the parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, in the municipality of Portimão, in Portugal. The family of monuments also includes a lime kiln.
This necropolis consists of a set of graves spread over an area of ten hectares. The most impressive of these graves is the large mammoa known as monument number seven, which is located in the center of the current museum area, formed by a central fool whose crypt is accessible by a narrow corridor facing east.
The archaeological remains of Alcalar account for the existence of an organized population whose basic subsistence mode was agriculture, with an appreciable capacity to exploit the earth’s resources. It is located in an area of arable land, reasonably flat, and where the once navigable section of Ribeira da Torre ended.
In the Lagos museum you can see stone axes and other lithic utensils from this region (not just Alcalar). Along the coastal strip of the Barlavento Algarve, several megalithic traces have been identified, especially those in Vila do Bispo.
