Located in the parish of Santa Maria, the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo, is the mother church of the city of Tavira.
It is reported that [1] this church was built in the 13th century, when the city of Tavira was conquered by the Moors under the initiative of the Order of Santiago (1242 [2]), by D. Paio Peres Correia, to replace the Arab mosque there existing.
In 1960, the commission for the commemorations of the 4th centenary of the death of Infante D. Henrique was responsible for erecting a pattern next to the church that reads:
“In this city, after taking Ceuta, Infante D. Henrique received the title of Duke of Viseu and Lord of Covilhã”.
