The Sítio das Fontes Municipal Park occupies an area of 18 ha (180,000m2), in an area belonging to the Municipality of Lagoa.

It is a very special place because, despite its small area, we can find here a great diversity of environments representative of the Mediterranean landscape – the salt marsh, the marshland, the scrubland, a small temporary lagoon, abandoned agricultural areas and the flats and water lines. .

The geological structure of Sítio das Fontes is also quite interesting and important, due to the presence of springs and proximity to the Arade river.

It stands out from a historical-cultural point of view because there are traces of human activities dating back to ancient times. The two water mills are the most eloquent testimonies of this human activity. The antiquity of at least one of them is documented in the “Livro do Almoxarifado de Silves”, from the 19th century. XV, which refers to a “(…) reference to the sources in which Vicente Pirez huu moynho (…)”.

There are still around twenty mills along the Arade River between Portimão and Silves, almost all of them in poor condition or reduced to ruins, but which clearly attest to the importance they once had for the local economy.

This is how, given its natural beauty and ecological importance, the existence of several high-flow springs and historical-cultural heritage, it has traditionally been used by local populations for leisure activities, celebrating festive dates, contact with nature, etc. .
