EMPREITARTE - FROM HEART TO HAND: THE LITTLE BAR - SEWING THE EMPREITA

All activities at the Municipal Library are free of charge, but require prior registration up to 48 hours before the event by phone at 282 767 816, the Library's Facebook page, or email biblioteca@cm-lagos.pt. Each initiative requires a minimum number of participants. If this number is not reached, the activity may be cancelled.

In this craft, all materials are used. There is no waste, and the thinner parts left over from the palm are used to make the "baracinha". And what is "baracinha"? It is the cord used to sew together the braided strips we make from the palm. We can make strong, thick, or thin cords. We will learn how this cord is made and how its ends are joined when sewing the pieces together. A whole art to experience!

“EmpreitArte” is an invitation to connect with your hands, allowing them to express themselves through the palm, a plant native to the Algarve region. We will get to know the palm of our hand through the palm of a plant that has long been linked to our culture and ancestry. In each workshop, an object will be created. From the heart to the hand, from the hand to art, we will begin by creating a bookmark.

BIOGRAPHY:
My name is Ana Carla Cabrita and I am from Sagres. I graduated in Business Communication and Public Relations, but I soon realized that I wouldn't be happy there. Later, when the dream of being a nature guide was already a reality, I did a postgraduate degree in Active Tourism in natural spaces in Spain. I have 15 years of experience as a nature guide, where the objective is to raise awareness about protecting the landscape that surrounds us. Personalized walks designed to minimize environmental impact. EmpreitArte emerged as a family art, having grown up harvesting palm with my aunt Diamantina. With Manuela Caneco, I reinforced the art of braiding and creating objects. With Ana Luísa Simões, I wrote the guide "200 Plants of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast," which sold out two editions. Plants, art, and people are passions that come together and launch the project "EmpreitArte - From Heart to Hand," with the goal of facilitating everyone's connection with their hands and heart, showing that the gift of creation is within each of us. I participate in community projects because I believe that strength lies in being part of a collective that shares. I am the mother of a beautiful 19-year-old, and meditation is part of my daily life.

Free parking - The Lagos Cultural Center and the Lagos Municipal Library offer free parking in the riverside park (Avenida dos Descobrimentos) for the public attending their shows/events. To receive the discount, users simply need to present a stamp obtained at the Lagos Cultural Center ticket office or the Lagos Municipal Library entrance at the park reception. The offer applies only to one hour before and up to one hour after each show/event.
