The village of Bordeira was the birthplace of the Charolas tradition, a musical style that reflects the spirit of community and has been passed down through generations, strongly characterized by the sound of the accordion, tambourine, and castanets that join the songs of the Charolas group.
On New Year's Day and Epiphany, the Charolas roam the streets of the village for a day full of performances – in cafes, in the homes of those who receive them, and, of course, at the Bordeira Recreational Society. They welcome the new year, shouting "vivas" (cheers) with messages, often provocative, of a political or social nature.
The Charolas are today an identifying mark of that people, a symbol of tradition and resistance and, above all, of pride. Pride in being from Bordeira, pride in being a Charolas!
For several days, Edgar Valente, João Frade, Nélson Conceição, and Rui Daniel lived closely with this daily life, developing an artistic residency whose objective was to reinvent this tradition, exploring new formats and possibilities. The result will be presented to the public for the first time on the stage of the Teatro das Figuras.
